The beaches of Sulcis Iglesiente

Masua beach

Masua beach is located in the municipality of Iglesias in southwestern Sardinia, in the middle of a unique coastline for the spectacularity of its crystalline sea and its stacks.

The coastal stretch that goes from the Gulf of Gonnesa to Buggerru is perhaps one of the most beautiful coastlines to travel in Sardinia, and Masua beach is in the middle with its spectacular Pan di Zucchero, a natural monument, a stack 133 meters high

The beach was once a natural port, on the left side you can visit Porto Flavia, an important mineral storage structure in the fifties, cutting edge for that era.

The crystalline sea everywhere tends to take on colors ranging from emerald on the shore to intense blue offshore, the sandy seabed and dotted with various rocks, animate with its marine life, the joy of snorkeling lovers.

From the beach you can embark on a rubber dinghy excursion around Pan di zucchero, climbing enthusiasts can scale its 133 meters, or through tour operators you can visit the tunnel-shaped caves. In front of the stack is the mouth of the Porto Flavia mining tunnel carved into the rock.

The Gulf of Gonnesa

This splendid coastal stretch is about 4 km long and is characterized by the presence of light and fine golden sand.

The sea water is crystal clear everywhere with colors ranging from emerald green to iridescent light blue.

The coastline is made up of 4 beaches Fontanamare, middle beach (or Plagemesu) Punta S’Arena and Porto Paglia.

The territory is characterized by the presence of Mines that until 1970 were the basis of the economic system of this territory.

Today the memory is in the presence of ancient mining warehouses close to the beach of Fontanamare.

In Porto Paglia instead there are the remains of one of the most important tuna fisheries in the Mediterranean in the eighteenth century.

In the territory there are also remains of a bunker from the Second World War and several archaeological sites, the most important being the complex of Seruci, a well-preserved Nuraghe complex that can be visited by reservation.

In the area behind the beach, the Mediterranean scrub extends among strawberry trees, heather, juniper, broom, holm oak, myrtle, wild olive and rosemary which grow luxuriantly on the numerous green mountain reliefs that reach down to the sea.

Cala Domestica Beach

Cala domestica is one of the most beautiful beaches in Sardinia. It is located about 2 km from the municipality of Buggerru in the South West of Sardinia.

The beach is characterized by fine and soft golden sand with a sea that fades from turquoise to emerald green.

On the beach there are still ruins of what remains of the old mining port, and a tunnel that connects to another smaller cove called Caletta, a beach well protected from the Mistral that blows violently in these parts. The seabed is quite low on the shore, the beach is very crowded in the summer due to its great notoriety.

Small beach, the services are: umbrella rental and two restaurant kiosks on the sides of the beach. In the center of the beach the dinghies dock and depart for the various excursions in the surrounding area, in particular towards Pan di Zucchero and Masua.

Porto Pino Beach

Porto Pino Beach is located in the territory of Sant’Anna Arresi (South West Sardinia). It is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Italy, it has a considerable extension of almost 3 km of white sand.

This beautiful beach ends in a suggestive desert environment with dunes that reach up to 30 meters high.

The beach is divided into two, the first part takes the name of the tourist resort of Porto Pino and is characterized by white and gray beach. The second has a much whiter and softer sand that ends with the dunes called Is Arenas Bianca in the territory of Teulada. The crystal clear turquoise blue sea has shallow sandy seabeds throughout the beach.

The island of Sant'Antioco

Sant’Antioco is an island located in the extreme southwest of Sardinia connected by a short artificial bridge next to the ancient Roman one now in ruins but clearly visible from the road.

It is the fourth largest island in Italy, and is divided into two municipalities, Calasetta to the North and Sant’Antioco to the South.

It was originally called Sulky by the Phoenician populations (770 BC) of which the historical testimonies are still well preserved in the municipal museums.

The main archaeological attractions are the Tophet and the Necropolis located on the hill of the Basilica, where the Roman necropolis and a cemetery of catacombs arose.

Pretty and quiet a few kilometers from the municipality of Sant’Antioco, to the north of the island is the municipality of Calasetta with its characteristic white and colored houses.

From the port of Calasetta it is possible to easily reach the nearby island of Carloforte by ferry.
